It‘s one of the most talked about stories in sports news today; Richard Sherman’s interview with Erin Andrews. Seconds after making the winning touchdown that will send the Seahawks to the Superbowl, Sherman ranted his excitement on national TV. Barely minutes after the interview the clip went viral; hitting Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and any other social media site out there. Sherman’s rant caused a lot of media uproar and discussion. Sure he could have handled the situation more maturely but he was in the moment and high off an adrenaline rush, who could blame him? Not only did they win by only 55 seconds left in the game, but they are breaking Seahawks history by making it this far.
Later, Erin Andrews spoke with CBS sports, backing up Richard Sherman’s rant during the last interview she had with him.
“I don’t want this to look like I was upset with him, I was frightened, I felt threatened, we all like Richard Sherman a lot at Fox,” Andrews said. “At that moment I saw how crazy it was going to blow up, and I wanted to make sure people knew it wasn’t a situation where I’m a victim and he acted like an idiot”
From a PR standpoint I think it was a defining moment for Richard Sherman, he revealed his true colors. Erin has done follow-ups with other newscasters and stands behind Sherman and explains that he was in the moment, she caught him in the heat of things “it was awesome and she loved it”, It’s what every reporter wants, and she got it!
Since Erin Andrews comments in the media fans now have a better understanding and a change in perception from what they initially thought of the interview. It just goes to show how easily people can be influenced and have a certain perception based on the media around us. Richard Sherman is a good guy, he may be a tad competitive and egotistical but he is also a great player. Remember, always check your sources before believing what you read on Twitter or Facebook because your opinion should be your own not from others around you!
